I have VMs running every version of windows from 3.11 through to Vista, to help with support. What matters is what dinosaur apps you have used with those. You cant be as confident with the dinosaur apps. In many cases I'd be more confident of a dinosaur app running in a VM than native.

I should mention that this particular instance of issues was occuring while i was running an acronis with normal priority, but 100% cpu utilization the whole time, however.. I HAVE had these issues without a similar app running with normal CPU utilization combined with 76% or higher utilization of memory.
